Free checklist · Updated for 2026

Shoppers are asking ChatGPT what to buy. Your store is not in the answer.

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini all recommend real products now. Most Shopify stores never show up. Usually the reason is stupid: a blocked crawler, a feed the AI cannot parse, or a missing schema tag.

This PDF is the exact process I use to get stores listed. Free. Grab it below.

  • The robots.txt and Cloudflare settings each AI actually needs
  • The product feed spec ChatGPT and Perplexity parse (Shopify defaults do not cut it)
  • Instant Checkout, who is eligible, and how the application really works
  • How to make reviews and ratings appear in AI shopping results
  • How to track AI traffic in GA4 and Shopify

Which platforms this covers

The tactical checklist is ChatGPT-first because it's the biggest shopping channel. Most of the same fixes apply across all four.

ChatGPT Primary focus

The primary target. Roughly half of AI shopping traffic. Instant Checkout live via Stripe + ACP.

Perplexity

Pulls product info from your feed. Shopping mode has been live and growing since 2025.

Google AI Overviews

Increasingly surfaces product results. Uses your Merchant Center feed plus schema on-page.

Gemini

Google's consumer AI. Cites products from indexed pages. Same schema unlocks visibility.

Why listen to me on this

I'm Nikhil. I run e-commerce operations for a US Shopify brand full-time. Not an agency guy. Not an OpenAI reseller. I wrote the post on Shopify's llms.txt rollout. This checklist is what I did on my own store and my clients. Not a repackaged OpenAI blog post.

What's inside

Six sections. You can work through it in an afternoon. No theory, no filler.

STEP 01

The crawler check

The exact robots.txt lines each AI needs (OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, PerplexityBot, GoogleOther), how to verify Cloudflare isn't silently blocking them, and how to prove ChatGPT can reach your product pages today.

STEP 02

A product feed AI can actually parse

The Shopify feed spec that works with ChatGPT Shopping and Perplexity (JSON-LD Product schema, GTINs, price, availability, image URLs). What breaks the feed and why Shopify's default markup is not enough.

STEP 03

Instant Checkout, without guessing

Who's eligible right now, how the Stripe + Agentic Commerce Protocol integration actually works, and the direct application link to OpenAI. Not a walkthrough of what OpenAI's docs already say — the stuff they leave out.

STEP 04

Reviews that show inside AI answers

Why your Judge.me or Yotpo widget doesn't automatically get pulled into ChatGPT or Perplexity, and the schema.org changes you need so ratings and review counts appear in AI shopping results.

STEP 05

Tracking that survives AI traffic

The UTM patterns OpenAI and Perplexity use on outbound clicks, how to build a GA4 dimension for AI traffic, and the Shopify Analytics gotcha that hides your AI-attributed revenue.

STEP 06

The five silent killers

Out-of-stock listings that keep serving, generic titles that get de-prioritised, missing GTIN penalties, the Cloudflare bot-block that hides you completely, and a fifth one nobody talks about.

Straight from the PDF

Real excerpts, not a mockup. This is the level of detail inside.

STEP 1 · FOUNDATION

The #1 hidden culprit

If you're on Cloudflare, the "Block AI bots" setting can silently return 403 to OAI-SearchBot even when your robots.txt looks perfect. Check Security → Bots and make sure AI-bot blocking is OFF for your domain.

STEP 5 · ATTRIBUTION

Track what ChatGPT actually sends

ChatGPT appends utm_source=chatgpt.com to outbound links. Build a GA4 segment on that source and track sessions, add-to-carts, and revenue from ChatGPT separately. Set the baseline before you optimize, or you cannot tell which change moved the needle.

STEP 6 · DON'T SELF-SABOTAGE

The five silent killers

Out-of-stock listings that keep serving. Weak, vague product titles the AI cannot match to a query. A feed that never refreshes so prices quietly go stale. Reviews trapped in a widget the crawler cannot read. And the one nobody talks about: the silent AI-bot block that

Two of my existing pieces on AI shopping. If you like them, the checklist is the tactical distillation.

From my post on Shopify's agentic commerce rollout

"Every Shopify store now has a llms.txt file by default. Most operators don't know it exists. That file is the first thing ChatGPT reads when it tries to figure out what your store sells — and by default, it points at things Shopify chose, not what you'd choose."

Common questions

Is this actually free?
Yes. Enter your email, get the PDF. I email occasionally about DTC and AI. One-click unsubscribe.
Who is this for?
Shopify operators. Founders. In-house ops or marketing people. If you run ads or SEO on Shopify, this applies to you. Not for agencies looking for a client-facing deck.
Does the checklist cover all four platforms in detail?
The tactical walkthroughs are ChatGPT-first because it's the biggest AI shopping channel by far. But the same crawler, feed, and schema fixes apply to Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini — the checklist calls out where each one differs.
Does this work if I'm not on Shopify?
The principles apply to any ecommerce platform. The specific tactical steps (feed setup, JSON-LD schema, Cloudflare settings) are written for Shopify because that's what I run day to day. You can adapt them.
Is AI shopping even a real channel yet?
Yes. OpenAI shipped Instant Checkout in late 2025 with Stripe. Perplexity's shopping mode has been active since 2025. Google AI Overviews now surfaces product results routinely. It's still early — which is exactly why fixing this now, before your competitors do, is worth an afternoon.
