ChatGPT Ads for Shopify Brands: Setup, Test and Read, Done With You

OpenAI started selling ads inside ChatGPT answers in 2026. By May any US business could buy them with no minimum, and by June campaigns could bid on a pixel conversion. I set one up for a DTC brand and wrote the full review of what the platform can and cannot do.

This page is the service version: I set the campaign up, run it as a measured test for 30 days alongside your Meta and Google, and tell you whether it earned a place.

Where ChatGPT ads sit

Where ChatGPT ads sit next to Meta and Google for a Shopify brand in late 2026: Meta creates demand and takes most of the budget with creative as the work, Google catches demand with Shopping always on and the feed as the work, and ChatGPT is new inventory with thin tooling, a $25 a day test rather than a budget line, with context hints and the pixel as the work

Meta creates demand. Google Shopping catches it. ChatGPT is a third place where people now ask what to buy, and the ads sit inside the answer.

The tooling is thin:

💡
New inventory, falling prices, unproven conversion. Early advertisers report real traffic with research intent and conversion rates well below search, which is why this is sold as a measured test with a holdout, not a budget line. The review collects what they are seeing.

Underneath the ads is the protocol layer. OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol closes purchases inside ChatGPT; Google and Shopify’s Universal Commerce Protocol is the open standard for the same thing, and Shopify publishes a UCP profile for every store at /.well-known/ucp. The setup checks that endpoint, the feed and llms.txt before any ad goes live, because they are what the agent reads after the click. What UCP means for Shopify brands is the longer argument.

💡
The right size for ChatGPT ads is a test. Funded by a credit where one is offered, measured against Shopify orders, and promoted to a budget line only when the purchase event says it earned one.

What the setup includes

The pixel, first. The browser pixel and the server side Conversions API on the store, with the purchase as the conversion event and a shared event ID so the two do not double count. Conversion campaigns cannot run without this.

💡
The setup is not finished until purchase identifier coverage is above 80 percent. That column in OpenAI's Conversions tab tells you how many events arrived with an email the platform can match.

The campaign. Conversions objective, bidding on the purchase, Autobid, the daily minimum, locations set, platforms set. The creative enhancement toggle, on by default and able to rewrite and translate your copy without review, decided deliberately: off for any brand with a voice or claims that have to be worded a certain way, on for a bilingual test where the claims survive any wording.

Context hints. The whole targeting model, so most of the thinking goes here. Written as the conversations the ad belongs in, not as demographics, in every language the market speaks. For a bilingual market that means the same intent twice.

Exclusions. The customer list uploaded under Audiences, which the platform allows for exclusion only, so the acquisition ads stop spending on people who already bought.

The ads. Three to five text ads, each with a title inside the 32 character warning and a description inside 54, a square image or a four to six image carousel, and the UTM placeholders for campaign, ad group and ad on every destination URL so GA4 and Shopify can tell them apart from the first click.

The read. At day 30, a written note: orders attributed in Shopify and GA4 against what the platform claims, cost per order, which hints and which ads the orders came from, and a recommendation to stop, hold, or fund.

💡
You keep the account, the pixel and the audience either way. The read says stop, hold or fund; nothing about the setup depends on the answer.

Who this is for

It is for a Shopify brand in the US, already running Meta or Google profitably, with the tracking in order and a product that answers a question people ask: a gift, a replacement, a what should I get for. Those are the conversations ChatGPT ads sit inside.

It is not for a brand selling on impulse and visuals, which will likelier find Meta still wins, and the read will say so. Nor for a store that has not yet proved its product on Meta or Google, because a test on a thin new channel will not tell you anything the main channels could not tell you faster. And it is not available to businesses outside the US yet.

What it costs

For brands I already run Meta or Google for, the test is added to the retainer and reported in the same sheet. On its own it is a fixed setup fee plus the 30 day read, scoped on a call.

💡
Ad spend is yours and paid to OpenAI directly. The platform minimum is $25 a day, about $750 for the 30 day test, and new accounts have been offered a $500 credit that covers most of it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Shopify store advertise on ChatGPT?
Yes, if the business is in the US. OpenAI's Ads Manager has been open to all US businesses since May 2026 with no account minimum and a $25 daily budget floor. Ads show only to logged in adult users on the Free and Go tiers; every paid tier is ad free, so professionals on company accounts never see them. Product ads from a feed are not available in every market; text ads with an image or carousel are available everywhere the platform is.
What does a ChatGPT ads setup include?
The pixel and the server side Conversions API on the Shopify store with the purchase as the conversion event, a conversion campaign with Autobid, context hints written in every language the market speaks, UTM placeholders on every ad so GA4 can tell them apart, a customer list uploaded for exclusion, a decision on the creative enhancement toggle, three to five text ads, and a written read after 30 days against Shopify orders, not platform numbers.
How much should a Shopify brand spend testing ChatGPT ads?
The platform minimum, $25 a day, for 30 days, which is about $750. New accounts have been offered a $500 credit for spending $500 by a deadline, which covers most of it. Do not move budget from Meta or Google to fund the test; it is a test of whether your customers ask ChatGPT the questions your product answers, and the only way to find out is to run it.
How does targeting work in ChatGPT ads?
Context hints: free text in the ad group describing the conversations the ad belongs in. No interests, demographics or lookalikes. Customer lists can be uploaded but only for exclusion. Locations can be included and excluded, and platforms chosen. The hints are the whole job, and writing them well in both languages of a bilingual market is most of what I do in the setup.
Is ChatGPT advertising worth it for a Shopify brand?
Unknown until you test it, and that is the honest answer for every brand right now. The inventory is new, competition is thin and prices are search level. Brands whose products answer a question people ask an assistant, gifts, replacements, what should I get for, are the likeliest to see it work. Brands selling on impulse and visuals are likelier to find Meta still wins. The 30 day read tells you which you are.
What does the setup cost?
For brands I already run Meta or Google for, it is part of the retainer. On its own it is a fixed setup fee plus the 30 day read, scoped on a call, and the ad spend is yours and paid to OpenAI directly.
